HTML and Search Engine Optimization – What You Don’t Know Can Kill You

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

When it comes to search engine optimization there is a lot of information available, some accurate, some not. If you really want to know what is going on regarding your website and how to best optimize it for good results with the search engines, you need to do some SEO research. Review the following suggestions and above all get your information verified from a variety of sites, don’t just take one site’s information as the truth and run with it because you could be running in the wrong direction.

-Frames Equal Death

If you are using frames on your website then your website is dead in the water when it comes to search engines. Frames cannot be indexed by the majority of search engines. Obviously this is bad because you want to be indexed by the search engines so eliminating frames from your website or building a new website without frames should be one of your major goals.

-No HTML Links

If you do not have HTML links on your site, but rather are using an image map from your homepage to your other pages then you might simply be asking the search engines to ignore these other web pages and these more than likely have some of your website’s most important information. If you are not using HTML links, start doing so, and bring your web page rankings in the search engines back to life.

-URL

Your URL is important and it is what will direct people to your website. However, if you include a “?” in your URL you are causing problems for many search engines. By using “?” in your URL formatting, you may be ignored and not indexed by the search engines. Do your best to keep the “?” symbol out of your URL and use keywords instead.

-No Links

If you do not have links to your website throughout the Internet, you are not maximizing your website’s true potential. To solve this problem, all you have to do is simply get other websites to link to your site. This can easily be done through reciprocal linking and the search engines will pick up your webpages and index them.

-No Keywords

If you do not optimize your website with keywords you will have some major problems when it comes to getting targeted search engine traffic. Search engines use keywords as a method to weigh your website against others so be sure to know your important keywords and include them in the content of your website.

Now that you have some information on search engine optimization and what you need to do to increase your targeted search engine traffic, get started optimizing you website so you can enjoy being ranked higher in the search results and ultimately boost your income.

The Top Ways to Increase Your Traffic

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

1. Search Engines

Optimize your website to be search-engine friendly. Submit it to various search engines and directories.
In addition to major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN, it’s worth submitting to lesser known web directories. If your website is listed in as many places as possible, it can boost your rankings in major search engines as well.

2. Affiliate Program

Set up an affiliate program where you pay people a percentage of each sale for referring customers to you.
Spread the word about your affiliate program by submitting it to affiliate program directories and contacting the owners of related websites.

3. Link Exchanges

Create a links page that will contain the links to other non-competing websites in the same industry.
Contact the owners of other websites with your proposal to exchange links. You will add their link to your links page, and they will link to your website in return.

4. Post In Forums

Visit the online discussion forums where people in your target market like to gather. Post useful responses to people’s questions, and include a link to your website at the end of your post next to your name.

5. Comment On Blogs

Visit other people’s blogs on the topic related to your website. Most blogs allow you to add comments about the issues being discussed.
Add insightful comments about the blog topics, and leave your website link. Your comment and your link will permanently remain on the blog website.

6. E-Mail Signatures

Create an e-mail “signature” – your name, your website address and a short tagline describing the main benefit of your site. Set your e-mail program to automatically add your signature to every e-mail that you send.

7. Traffic Exchanges

There are many times of traffic exchanges but the idea is the same – you team up with other webmasters, and they send you traffic in exchange for you sending them traffic. Search the web for “traffic exchange” to find those services.

8. “Pass-Around” Strategy

Create something of value that people will pass around. It can be a report with useful information that you allow people to give away. It can also be some kind of cool and unusual webpage that people will want to e-mail to all their friends.
Of course, the pass-around item will include your advertisement and your link, spreading the word about your website.

9. Writing Articles

Write articles on the topic related to your website, and include a link to your site in your author bio. Submit your articles to article directories, and allow people to publish your article in their newsletters and websites.
Your articles will spread around the web like wildfire. People will read them and visit your website.
The best part is that people who read your articles will regard you as an expert, and they will be much more likely to buy from you when they go to your website. How’s that for a free publicity?

To Build Muscle, Get Smart!

Monday, December 29th, 2008

If you want to build muscle mass, you first have to work at getting smarter!

When you learn better, you can start to do better. When you start to do better, you get better results.

But there comes a point where if you start to read up and try too many different things, you’ll get away from the basics of muscle building and fat loss.

That’s why it’s dangerous for young kids to pick up a muscle mag written by the pros. The workout routines contained in those magazines ARE NOT written for people just beginning or even people considered advanced.

The workout routines written in most muscle mags you see on the book stands were written by pro bodybuilders that have above average genetics (so they can handle more weight training) and also they use performance enhancing substances that should only be used under a doctor’s supervision.

So there’s a fine line between becoming educated and becoming over educated. You want a working, common sense knowledge.

Learn what causes muscle to grow and fat to burn off the body. You don’t care about advanced workout theory or new designer supplements.

You want basic, applicable knowledge of what must be done to lose fat and gain muscle. The easier something is to understand, the more likely it will be applied and used.

And since most people fail to see results in their routines because they’ve been misinformed and misled about what it takes, you need to focus more on common sense.

Most people build muscle the same way (same process must be used). Most people burn fat the same way (same processes must be used)

So learn from others, either through books, websites, articles, or personal conversation, what has worked for them.

Be careful who you listen to though, everyone has an opinion on what they feel works. Before listening, make sure that what they’re doing:

1. Works – don’t take fat-burning tips from those overweight or muscle building tips from those with no muscle.

2. Is safe – skip the drugs or latest and greatest supplement or workout routine

3. Sounds right. If it sounds like common sense, great, but if you’re scratching your head, walk away.

4. Make sure it comes from someone qualified to give advice. Have they done fitness contests or are they certified trainers. Listening to the wrong people can get you hurt.

So spend this 30 day period becoming informed and educated about the basics of muscle building. Visit a bookstore and pick up some books on basic weight training, or aerobics, or fat burning, or nutrition and read through and learn some stuff you can apply.

Skip right over anything that sounds “advanced, too good to be true, too confusing, or anything else that’s not basic, common sense.

Achieving a great physique and fitness levels really comes down to just focusing on a few common sense areas (diet and exercise!) So before looking for the advanced stuff, make sure you’ve learned the basics.

If you resolve to learn just one new thing about cardio, weight training, or nutrition each week for a year, that’s 52 new things you’d learn.

Becoming fit is a process, one that involves education, experience, time, and action.

Start to learn better so that you can start to do better. It’s not what you know that counts. It’s not what you do that counts. It’s what you know AND do that produces results!

We Just Need To Have FUN!

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Do you have fun everyday? The kind of fun that Cyndi Lauper knew that girls wanted to have, although she chose to ignore the poor guys! The fun that makes you run out on a sunny day and play in the park, with or without children? Or that makes you crank up the stereo and go dancing through the house bellowing at the top of your lungs, despite the fact that dogs are howling outside? If you don’t do this on occasion you’re really missing out! In fact, you could be self-sabotaging your everyday goals by not incorporating fun into your daily existence. Yes, you read correctly, I did say daily!

I’m sure that you’ve heard the old adage about it taking three times the number of facial muscles to frown than to laugh, right? If you haven’t, it does take 43 muscles to frown and 17 muscles to laugh, but here are a few other facts about fun and laughter.

• Fun resulting in laughter activates the immune system

• Laughter boosts the number and activity level of killer cells. Those that attack viral infections and some cancer and tumor cells

• Laughter decreases stress hormones
• Laughter decreases epinephrine levels and decrease dopamine levels which are associated with high blood pressure
• Laughter relaxes muscles

The most startling tidbit is that we’re born with a sense of fun. Did you know that the average preschooler laughs or smiles about 400 times per day? By the time he or she grows up, the number decreases to a mere 15 times per day! That’s awful! Amazing how we allow ourselves to take something that comes naturally and suppress it due to daily environment, outside influences, or preconceptions. Just because preschoolers grow up into adults does not mean the fun has to disappear on the journey. Fun can and should, mature as well.

John and Raquel are parents of two very active preschoolers. They both work, him from home and her as an accountant outside of the home. They love their children, but one night when they got together with a neighboring family, they realized how serious their lives had become. They did their work, did the grocery shopping, took the kids to daycare, picked them up, did things together as a family, ate together, and had a nighttime ritual, but they did not really have F-U-N together. When John and Raquel witnessed how much laughter was present and how much less discord there was, they were intrigued. So they decided to get back to some of the fun things they used to do as a couple, to incorporate the family into what they could, and to find some things that the kids like. To start they began bike riding with the children, began making weekly outings to fun, but educational spots, started going dancing again, and began walking the neighborhood in the evenings for the exercise and the family time. The results were pretty dramatic, right from the start. They laughed and smiled more, bickered less, the children talked more (perhaps not a plus when you have two preschoolers), John and Raquel reconnected as a couple, and they reconnected as a family of four. The biggest surprise they found was mood elevation, and the positive affect their moods had on their careers. They vowed to keep fun in their lives and to keep it growing with the children.

John and Raquel learned firsthand how much of a positive affect fun had on both their family and work environments.

Whether you have a family or not, the next time someone interrupts your workflow with a joke, or you’re in a supreme funk, just allow some humor and fun into your day. Despite the fact that you may feel like you’re goofing off, in reality you’re merely taking steps towards success from the inside out. You’ll be nurturing your body, mind, and spirit with a natural high that does so much to promote great health and good feelings. And the best part…It’s even FREE!

7 Blocks To Creative Thinking And How To Solve Them

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Each of us has the power to be creative. It’s part of our natural make-up as human beings. The trouble is that, too often, we block our natural creativity and so make errors in thinking and give ourselves more problems than we should. Here are 7 ways to open up your natural creativity and keep the channels unblocked.

1. Don’t Make Assumptions. When we assume, we often make an “ass” out of “u” and “me”. Assumptions are examples of lazy thinking. We simply don’t wait to get all the information we need to come to the right conclusions. There is the story of the customer at the bank who after cashing a cheque and turning to leave, returns and says: “Excuse me, I think you made a mistake.” The cashier responds, “I’m sorry but there’s nothing I can do. You should have counted it. Once you walk away we are no longer responsible.” Whereupon the customer replies: “Well, okay. Thanks for the extra $20.”
Tip: When you feel yourself wanting to draw conclusions, just wait until you have all the information.

2. See Things From Other Points Of View. A truly open mind is willing to accept that, not only do other people have other just as valid points of view from theirs, but that these other points of view may be more valid. A story is told that the modernist painter Pablo Picasso was once traveling on a train across Spain when he got into conversation with a rich businessman who was dismissive of modern art. As evidence that modern art didn’t properly represent reality, he took out a photo of his wife from his wallet and said: “This is how my wife should look, not in some silly stylized representation.” Picasso took the photo, studied it for a few moments and asked: “This is your wife?” The businessman proudly nodded. “She’s very small,” observed Picasso wryly.
Tip: Don’t have a monopoly on how things are. Things aren’t always what they seem. Be ready to consider other points of view.

3. Avoid Yo-Yo Thinking. Some people tend to have a tendency to swing from a highly positive mood one minute to a highly negative one the next, all because of what they see in front of them. It’s like a yo-yo: up one minute, down the next. It’s far more healthy to stay neutral and not let emotions get the better of you.
Tip: Remember that things are rarely as good – or as bad – as you think they are.

4. Get Rid Of Lazy Thinking Habits. Habit can be a major stumbling block to clear thinking and another example of laziness. Try this experiment. Write down the Scottish surnames Macdonald, Macpherson, and Macdougall and ask someone to pronounce them. Now follow these with the word Machinery and see what happens. Most people are likely to mis-pronounce it. This is because we tend to think in habitual ways and don’t like what doesn’t fit.
Tip: Don’t think that, just because things happened in a certain way once before, that they will happen like that again.

5. Don’t Think Like An Old Person, Think Like A Child. Research shows that the number of synapses, or connections, in the brain is greater in a child of two than in an average adult. The reason for this is that, while a child of two has no limiting world view, as adults we do. It’s like a sculptor who starts off with a large block of clay, more than he needs, and then gradually removes the clay as he moulds his sculpture. If we use our brain like a child, accepting everything without judgment, we can actually halt and reverse the brain ageing process.
Tip: Don’t worry about the myth of age. With the right stimulus and a passion for learning, you can actually improve your brain’s powers.

6. See The Detail As Well As The Big Picture. You may know the poem by John Godfrey Saxe called “The Blind Men and the Elephant”. This tells how six blind men of Indostan go to see an elephant and each try to work out what it is from touching it. One blind man touches the tusk, another the trunk, another the tail, and so on. Of course, not being able to see the whole elephant, they come to wildly different conclusions.
Tip: Try to keep the big picture in front of you while looking at details. It will help to put everything in its proper place and context.

7. Think For Yourself. Taking time out to think is still frowned on in many organizations that prize activity over creativity. People who work in creativity-constrained organizations are likely to think the way they are supposed to think, or as others think, or as has always been the way to think. It’s like the blinkered thinking that Hans Christian Anderson describes in his story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Everyone in the land refuses to see that the emperor is naked and has been duped into believing he is wearing a splendid costume for his coronation. Only a young boy who has been ill and not party to the cultural brainwashing can see the truth and cries out: “Look, everyone, the Emperor is wearing no clothes!”
Tip: Don’t let others tell you how to think. When others ask your opinion, tell it to them straight.

Once you make these 7 techniques part of your habitual thinking patterns, you will amaze yourself with how easy it is to come up with fresh, innovative and creative solutions to all of life’s problems.

Downtown San Diego Condo Inventory Supply to be Cut in Half in 2006.

Friday, December 26th, 2008

The condo market in downtown San Diego has seen its volume of available resale units climb from 50 to 580 from spring 2004 to the fall of 2005. The main reason for this was the completion of new condominium buildings. Recent experience shows that when a new building is completed about 20 to 25% of the units will come up for resale (from investors).

In 2005 (as of Nov 27th) there were 356 new condos (built in 2005) that came on the market. In 2006, no new condo buildings expected to complete construction with the exception of the second phase of Gaslamp CitySquare which is running behind its 2005 completed schedule date. This means that at the absorption rate we are experiencing in the downtown condo market our available inventory should drop to about 200 units by the end of 2006. This will lead to firmer price stabilization in early 2006 and price increases in late 2006. Two other facts support this, one: a lot of new builders are not allowing investors (those that want to flip the unit) to purchase from them, secondly, most of the new construction to be completed in 2007 will not be move-up properties but rather targeted to an audience not yet downtown. I say this because of the quality and location of many new projects slated to hit the market in 2007.

Condo shoppers knowing this would be wise to purchase a condo before spring as the inventory is already off its peak (now 539 units, down from 580) and this trend will continue over 2006. Meaning as time goes on, less to choose from and more demand from the remaining units (higher prices).

The above information has been provided by downtown resident and Realtor Mark Mills with RE/MAX Real Estate Consultants. Visit him at http://www.LiveAtTheTop.com Where you will find downtown condos ratings and reviews.

Stop Foreclosure: Protect Your Credit and Keep Your Home

Friday, December 26th, 2008

John lost his manufacturing job six months ago in a round of mass layoffs, and he’s been unable to find consistent work since. He and his wife had little in savings, and with every day that passes they’re getting further and further behind on their bills.

Two months ago today, Mary’s husband walked out on her and the kids. Between childcare costs and other bills, she can barely afford to put food on the table.

Every day thousands of people across the U.S. fall deeper into debt, often through no fault of their own. Left unchecked, this debt ultimately threatens their number one asset, their home, through the process of foreclosure.

It doesn’t have to end there, though. There are ways to stop foreclosure, protect your credit and keep your home.

What is Foreclosure?

In most states, when you buy a home there are actually two parties on the buying side: you (the mortgagor) and the lender (the mortgagee). You own the home, but the mortgagee holds a lien on the property for as long as the mortgage has an outstanding balance. The lien gives the lender the right to assume ownership of the property should you fall behind on payments. That process by which the lender assumes ownership is called foreclosure.

All other states use a deed of trust, which serves the same purpose as a mortgage but actually involves three parties: you (the trustor), the lender (the beneficiary), and a third party (the trustee) who holds the temporary title on the home until the full balance is paid. In these states, the foreclosure process involves the trustee selling your home when you become delinquent.

A key difference between mortgages and deeds of trust is in the foreclosure process. With a mortgage, the lender must go through the court system to foreclose on your home. Not so with a deed of trust. The trustee must first fulfill certain requirements, but is then free to sell your home without going through the court system, leading to a much faster foreclosure.

How to Stop Foreclosure

Contact the Lender

Absolutely the first step to avoid foreclosure is to contact the lender and let them know your situation. In many cases, they can work with you to temporarily modify payment terms until your situation is resolved.

Never, ever ignore late notices, letters or calls from your lender. They would much prefer to work together with you to resolve the situation, but will not hesitate to begin foreclosure proceedings if it appears that you are unwilling to work with them to avoid foreclosure.

Redo Your Mortgage

If you’re still current on your payments, or not too far behind, refinancing may be a viable option for you. Refinancing will pay off your current mortgage and in many cases lower your monthly payment at the same time. It can be the most straightforward method to avoid foreclosure.

Sell Your House

This may be the toughest route to stopping foreclosure, particularly if you still need somewhere to live, but it may be the only way to stay out of trouble and prevent a black mark from appearing on your credit record. If you need to sell fast, there are home buyers in your area who will allow you to do that. They can close in 10 days or less, or on whatever timetable fits your schedule, and allow you to walk away with cash at closing.

Be very, very careful, though. There is no shortage of people who will use this opportunity to make a profit for themselves at your expense. To keep yourself from falling victim to these predators, be sure to read “We Buy Houses” Scams — How to Spot Them and How to Avoid Them.

Protecting Your Credit

Ultimately, protecting your credit must be your number one goal. Your credit report will be with you for the rest of your life, and having a foreclosure noted on it will cause problems for many, many years down the road — problems that only time will erase. Take steps now to keep that from happening. It may be difficult in the short-term, but the long-term results far outweigh the alternative.

Travel Breaks for the Eco Conscious Skier

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Dozens avid skiers will presently be dusting down their ski equipment and shooting off seeking the heaviest snow conditions.

And beyond any doubt the affect from your carbon footprint will be nearly as far down the list of holiday essentials as a xmas cracker after xmas.

Just last year, a slow snow hit the tabloids and holidaymakers were frightened about the flecks of snow disappearing nearly as soon as they put down.

Skiing company Chalet1802, based at the bottom of Mont Blanc in Chamonix village in the French Alps, is one of the only independent businesses to go carbon neutral and offer skiers an environmentally friendly selection whilst reserving their skiing trip.

Chalet1802 founder Amaris said: Last season was quite a shock with the most warm wintertime in 60 years in the French Alps. Alpine skiing areas such as La Clusaz, La Rosiere and Isola 2000 suffered. It was balmy and the snowfall did not settle so a lot of the early winter snowboarding season in the Alps was uneven. We resolved to become carbon negative to assist in the preservation the snowboarding resort.

Amaris said: We’re not attempting to prescribe to punters only we think it is crucial to afford the guests the option without augmenting the price of the stay. When the guest book with us and vacations in our chalet Chamonix they may further off set their carbon output and we absorb the additional costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – people wish for opulence but not at the expense of the surroundings, so we considered methods of reducing the results of a client flying over here for a skiing holiday.”

The company have also partnered with organisation Climate Care, who deals with global warming by providing carbon dioxide reductions on behalf of individuals and businesses.

Home Mortgage Refinancing – Things to Consider When Looking to Get Cash Out on a Refinance

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

When you refinance your home mortgage, lenders often tempt you with the option of cashing out part of your home’s equity. Cash at a comparably low interest rate may seem like a good option, but make sure you will financially benefit from it first.

Raising Your Home’s Value

Only some home improvements raise the value of your home. Bathroom and kitchen upgrades are one example of this. However, with most remodel jobs, you will not see a financial gain. If you are using your home’s equity to fund projects, make sure that your investment will pay off.

Saving On Interest Payments

Paying off credit cards with your home’s equity will save you money in two ways. First of all, you will save on interest payments. Secondly, the interest you pay on your mortgage is tax deductible, unlike credit card interest.

PMI Penalty

Private mortgage insurance kicks in if you borrow more than 80% of your home’s value. These extra payments can add up to several hundred dollars a year, so be careful how much you borrow. Other lines of credit may be more cost efficient when you factor in the cost of PMI on your mortgage.

The Length Of The Loan

While it may see smart to take out equity at a low interest rate with your mortgage, it may be cheaper to cash out through a home equity loan. Home equity loans allow you to deduct interest payments from your taxes, but they require a shorter repayment period.

Interest rates on a home equity loan are higher, so you will need to compare the costs between refinancing and a home equity loan. Generally, if your mortgage is long-term, a home equity loan is a better deal.

Your Financial Situation

To decide whether to cash out the equity of your home, you have to make decisions around what is best for your financial situation. There are no hard rules for this type of decision.

For example, purchasing a car with your home’s equity may be a wise investment if you need a car and would struggle with a car payment. In the end, financial decisions are about making trade-offs.
