Is it a Gimmick or Finally Practical? – Flying Car
Thursday, August 19th, 2010Anyone who has ever been undone by dogged traffic jams should take notice, by the end of next year this dream may finally come to fruition. Today, for only a $10 thousand dollar deposit you can hold a place for your personal Terrafugia Transition, a winging auto which will reportedly be street legal. This innovative company has been engaged in the innovation for the vehicle from back in 2006 and it is finally becoming a positive result.
The flying automobile, or as it is referred to by the company, this road able aircraft realizes 30 miles per gallon in highway driving, has front wheel drive, plus can hold 2 people. Its cargo space has room for many items. The car can achieve regular highway speeds plus still be capable to fit in a normal garage and parking place if the wings are closed up. If you want to take flight merely activate the button in the cockpit and spread out the vehicles wings. After that all that is required is a mere third of a mile of straight pavement for takeoff. Legally you do have to take off and land on a legal airport so that air traffic can be controlled. But who knows how that will change in the future?
With a 400 mile range plus a cruising velocity of 115 miles per hour in the air, the Transition is great for taking those long family vacations. Terrafugia reports this vehicle is perfect for trips anywhere from 100 and 400 miles. A driver only requires a drivers license and a Light Sports Aircraft license to operate the Transition. The pilots license only demands 20 hours of flying time with only five of those must be solo. You can even obtain the flight license through Terrafugia.
The Transitions safety features follow all government auto safety standards enforced by the NHTSA. This includes crumple zones, airbags and some other safety characteristics essential to make the vehicle street legal. Complementary safety features follow FAA ordinances.
The Terrafugial Transition is set for its introduction fall/winter 2011.
