Travel Breaks for the Eco Conscious Skier

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Dozens avid skiers will presently be dusting down their ski equipment and shooting off seeking the heaviest snow conditions.

And beyond any doubt the affect from your carbon footprint will be nearly as far down the list of holiday essentials as a xmas cracker after xmas.

Just last year, a slow snow hit the tabloids and holidaymakers were frightened about the flecks of snow disappearing nearly as soon as they put down.

Skiing company Chalet1802, based at the bottom of Mont Blanc in Chamonix village in the French Alps, is one of the only independent businesses to go carbon neutral and offer skiers an environmentally friendly selection whilst reserving their skiing trip.

Chalet1802 founder Amaris said: Last season was quite a shock with the most warm wintertime in 60 years in the French Alps. Alpine skiing areas such as La Clusaz, La Rosiere and Isola 2000 suffered. It was balmy and the snowfall did not settle so a lot of the early winter snowboarding season in the Alps was uneven. We resolved to become carbon negative to assist in the preservation the snowboarding resort.

Amaris said: We’re not attempting to prescribe to punters only we think it is crucial to afford the guests the option without augmenting the price of the stay. When the guest book with us and vacations in our chalet Chamonix they may further off set their carbon output and we absorb the additional costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub - people wish for opulence but not at the expense of the surroundings, so we considered methods of reducing the results of a client flying over here for a skiing holiday.”

The company have also partnered with organisation Climate Care, who deals with global warming by providing carbon dioxide reductions on behalf of individuals and businesses.

The Best French Ski Resorts for Luxury Self Catered Chalets

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Whilst finding a ski vacation the choice of ski area is somewhat worrying. In particular whilst attempting to find a snowboarding field suitable for self catered chalets. Fortunately I’ve made a list of the best French ski towns most suitable for self catered skiing holidays:

La Mongie, Tignes, Les Houches, Chamonix, Espace Killy, Plateau de Beille, Portes du Soleil, La Rosiere, Serre Chevalier, La Tania.

Tim Divola from Poland is a Sanitary Engineer, we quizzed him about his first choice French skiing resort. Unsurprisingly he plumped for Portes du Soleil a French ski resort infamous for its bewildering number of chalets.

Why do you choose self catered skiing holidays in place of the more traditional choice of a b&b?

Well now I relish the flexibility which self catered ski holidays gives you. The chalet is always impressive and in place of the uninteresting meals in motel I can prepare a delicious super.

What if you’re not a adequate food maestro?

In that case you just go to a local restaurant.

Well then do you have some good insider tips for us?

It’s got to be Doughboy’s Subs & Pizza managed by NOLAN and it’s cowtippers coconut cake is unmissable.

In conclusion if you are considering self catering chalets Chamonix then how about considering one of skiing field on French ski the list.

Get up Close with Eagles

Friday, September 26th, 2008

For those people out there that have never experienced a safari in South Africa can find it hard to imagine the breathtaking wildlife you will probably come up close with. The folks who come to a walking safari are regular tourists like you and me, some are into taking wildlife photos, some holiday makers are into African animals but all of them are interested in a new fantastic experience.

The fantastic thing about a safari is the fact it is so different from a package holiday to Germany, there are very little children. Each safari company will give you an English speaking tourist guide to take you through the outstanding areas of Africa. The most popular African animals you might well see are tigers. The aforementioned stunning animals are not tame and of course do not scare them. If you are interested in taking photographs of the rhinos you should make sure you turn off the flash as you do not want to scare the animals. The outstanding wildlife in Africa will often put a grin on your face.

If you would love to identify more about tremendous safaris in Africa you will often use the search engine like Google to find a safari company that offers safari holidays from the UK, the prices might often range from five hundred pounds to 700 pounds. Kaingo are one of the UK’s newest African Safari providers.

Cyprus Holidays for All

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Cyprus is an island with a long tradition of Greek history, but what it is best known for is its spectacular climate, which has made it a very popular destination with tourists, with over 2.4 million visiting the island each year. The island receives over 330 days of sunshine a year, which has given it the name The Island of the Sun. With plenty of travel agents able to arrange Cyprus holidays and low cost airlines such as Easyjet offering routes to Paphos and Larnaca, getting there is cheaper than ever.

While attracting visitors from around the world, most of them tend to be Europeans. In recent years Russians and Poles have become poolside regulars alongside the French, Germans and, of course, us Brits.. One of the main reasons why there is such a heavy presence of Brits in Cyprus is because of the positioning of the British Armed forces in the southern Greek part of the island. The UK retains a military base in order to have a gateway for forces to the Middle East. The impact of this on the surrounding area is that Cypriots have grown used to, and in turn, now cater for the Brits. From English being spoken everywhere you go, to driving on the left side of the road. A major attraction for many Brit tourists is that the island offers all of the comforts and familiarities of home, but we also get to bask in the sun.

Much of olden Cyprus is giving away to culture that is more eclectic and less traditional. However, this side of Cyprus, that continues to attract millions of tourists year after year, is only one aspect of the island and is concentrated around the tourist hotspots of Paphos, Larnaca and Ayia Napa. As soon as you leave the packaged paradise and clubbers haven of these areas and hit the road the real country reveals itself.

Its worth tearing yourself away from the beach and visiting the Troodod Mountains if you can. In the heart of the mountains you will find the Kykkos monastery, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1998. Housing art and exhibits on ancient Greece, the monastery has the twin function of being a museum for visitors and a practising monastery lived in by worshiping monks. Kykkos even has its own winery where the monks bottle and sell their wine. A daytrip to the Troodos Mountains can be a welcome change from the beach and with overnight accommodation available in many of the authentic villages dotted about; you might want to spend a few days here sampling another side of Cyprus.

Motorhome Hire

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Motorhomes for hire come in all shapes, sizes and prices. The trick is to find a motorhome to suit your requirements and budget. Smaller vans are easier to handle, but larger vans offer more comfort. If it’s your first time, I suggest you go for the largest van that you feel happy to drive, within your budget. There are a few styles of motorhome to choose from.

A hightop is basically a van conversion with a specially made high fixed roof. These come in various lengths, short, medium and long. These sizes refer to the wheelbase, which is the distance between the front and rear axle. Motohomes with a medium wheelbase are popular hire choices as they are easier to handle than the long wheelbase versions, whilst still offering a good degree of comfort. Some companies also offer motorhome hire with folding roofs. The above types of motorhomes are often referred to as camper vans.

Coachbuilt motorhomes (C class) are generally a lot larger than campers and are more like a house on wheels. Most will have all the comforts of home and often a double bed. Many of the designs have a bed area which sits over the top of the drivers cab. These motorhomes can be expensive to run and hire.

Fuel costs are a definite consideration for many when deciding to hire a motorhome. This problem has been taken on board by the rental companies and manufacturers. Many motorhome hire companies now offer vans with conversions to LPG. This should at least half your fuel costs.

Don’t overstretch your budget on the motorhome hire cost. Part of the enjoyment of the motorhome is being able to visit and enjoy new places. If you are a couple, a medium wheelbase motorhome should provide you with a good overall comfort levels and ease of use.

One thing I should mention is that insurance cover for motorhome hire can be expensive and you should know up front exactly what you are covered for. Take time to review the policy. Remember to comply with most insurance policies you should carry out the daily maintenance tasks on the motorhome as specified by your rental agent.

You’ve booked the motorhome hire, now what.

Well it really depends on what type of holiday you are looking for. If you are using the motorhome as a base to visit new places then to get the most out of your hire, it’s always a good idea to plan your route in advance. This means that you will know each day where you are going and don’t waste any time deciding where to go while on your holiday. Of course for some, there will be no route and hiring a motorhome is all about the open road with a new adventure each day.
